Eulogy on Vishnu by Bhagirath

O Vishnu, the one, Who is the purifier of three worlds, Whose feet is revered by the universe, Who is the Lord of the world, Who is the nourisher of this world, Who is Supreme among best of men, Who is known as Narayan, Who is infallible, Who is known as Hari, Who is the slayer of Madhu and Kaitabh, Who is the supreme Lord! Accept my salutations and shower blessings.||1||

O Vishnu, the one, Who is the only reason in this world, Who is indefinitely old, Who is the support of this world, Who has the mark of Sri Vatsa¹ on His chest, Who is Vibhu, Who is slayer of Madhu, Who is Govind, Vaman and Janardan, Who is all pervading, Who is the supreme Lord! Accept my salutations and shower blessings.||2||

O Vishnu, the one, Who is immeasurably strong, Who is all pervading, Who is known as Vasudev, Who is the destroyer of the destroyer of demons (that is, Kaal), Who is the destroyer of fear, Who is shiny and complete, Who is Vaikunth, Who is known as Madhav, Who holds the earth in her place, Who is enticing in appearance, Who is the supreme Lord! Accept my salutations and shower blessings.||3||

O Vishnu, the one, Who is the consort of Lakshmi, Who is the Lord of immortals (demi-gods), Who is the Lord of this universe, Who is the resting place of Maya, Who is filled with benevolence, Who is known as Keshav, Who is the Lord, Who agglutinates happiness in our life, Who has eyes like lotus, Who is pure wisdom, Who is the ruler of tongue and everything! I continuously bow to you.||4||

Salutations to the all pervading Vishnu, Who is abode of infinite resplendance, Who is endless happiness for our soul and heart, and Who is representative of pure knowledge.||5||

Now my birth has been successful, now my penance has been successful, when I am seeing You [in front of me], Who is difficult to be visualized even by demi-gods.||6||

Notes:

¹Once Bhrigu, the mind-born son of Brahma decided to examine who is greatest among Shiv, Vishnu, and Brahma. Bhrigu stormed into the place where Brahma resides and Brahma felt a bit dejected by his behavior. Bhrigu moved to the residence of Shiv and Shiv tried to embrace Him. Bhrigu replied to Shiv that You should not touch me because Your whole body is smeared with dirty ash. On the insult, Shiv decided to slay Bhrigu but Parvati pacified Him. Bhrigu further went to Vaikunth and slammed his foot on the chest of Vishnu. Vishnu immediately stood up and said, ‘‘Oh, when did you arrive? I did not even notice you! And when you slammed your foot on my tough chest, it must have gotten an injury. Please have a seat so that I can comfort your feet.’’ Hearing these words, Bhrigu was pleased by the quality-less nature of Vishnu. Since then, the mark of Brahman's feet on Vishnu chest has been duly described in many eulogies.
