Durgāṣṭakam

O Durgā, Who rules over Para, Who bestows auspicion as Goddess, Who rules over that which is beyond everything, Who is adorable, Who is the consort of Maheśa (Śiva), Who is the ocean of compassion, Who is worthy of eulogies, Who is Svadhā, Who absolves all pain, Who rules over demi-gods, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.1[1]

O Durgā, Who is divine, Who is bowed upon by hundreds of Veda, Who is spotless, Who rules the universe, Who is more beautiful than hundreds of Rati (wife of Kāmadeva or Kandarpa) put together, Who rules over Mādhava, Who is wisdom, Who is the daughter of Himālaya, Who is steady, Who rules over Śiva, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[2]

O Durgā, Who is the queen of sports, Who absolves the pain of those who have bowed upon Her, Who is the Kuladevatā, Who is dear to Dharma, Who absolves fear, Who is foremost in giving boons, Who is Vāgdevatā (Goddess of speech), Who is bowed upon by Brahmā, Who rules over Brahmā (One seated on lotus), Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[3]

O Durgā, Who is honorable, Who has a great bull as vehicle, Who is Goddess Maṅgalā, Who is Padmā, Who is Digambarā (as Kālī), Who is the great Goddess, Who rules forests, Who is beautiful, Who is the Earth, Who is bowed upon by demi-gods, Who is the Goddess Gayā2, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[4]

O Durgā, Who is sincerity, Who is bowed upon by demi-gods and demons, Who is everything, Who rules the ether, Who is River Gaṅgā, Who is the consort of Girīśa (Śiva), Who rules over Gaṇeśa, Who is deft, Who resides in cremation-ground (as Cāmuṇḍā), Who rules over Indra, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[5]

O Durgā, Who is Goddess Tārā2, Whose eyes are moist with compassion, Who rules over Madhu and Kaiṭabha, Who is the Goddess of God of knowledge, Who is Yamā (death), Who rules over all the Akṣara, Who is energy, Who has four breasts, Who is eternal, Who is free, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[6]

O Durgā, Who is Mokṣā (liberation), Who is unsteady, Who is Tripurasundarī, Who is red in complexion, Who is Māheśvarī, Who has three-eyes, Who is strong, Who rules over Yajña, Who is thirst, Who has waves, Who is strength, Who bestows speed, Who is immovable, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[7]

O Durgā, Who is Viśvambharā (all-bearing), Who bestows everything, Who is narrated, Who is Goddess Jayā, Who is situated in Mountain Vindhya, Who has a moon-face, Who bestows [desires] quickly, Who is Goddess Dayā, Who is Mother, Who has lotus-eyes, Who is elegant, Who rules over Kāmadeva, Who is eulogized by Kṛṣṇa, Who is Lalitā, and Who rules over everything! Bestow benevolence on me.[8]

This eulogy Durgāṣṭakam bestows every desire. Having adored Beautiful and Great Durgā, Who is bowed upon by Hari and Hara with various means, he, who is very sincere, and recites this Durgāṣṭakam, achieves every heartfelt desire which does not disappears.[9]

Footnotes:

1 Literally the sentence means ‘‘Cast benevolence on me.’’ We feel that ‘bestow’ fits better than ‘cast’ in the translation.

2 Gayā and Tārā are among the ten Daśamahāvidyā.
