The son of Aṅgirā spoke:
There are uncountable incarnations of Mahātmā Gaṇeśa. It is not possible to speak the stories (of Gaṇeśa incarnations) by me even in one hundred years. In brief, I will speak about incarnations — incarnations, which are notable among notable, which are popular as eight in number, and incarnations which hold the Brahman.
Vakratuṇḍa incarnation is remembered as One Who holds Brahman in corporeal bodies, Who is the killer of Matsarāsura, and Who goes on a lion-vehicle. Ekadanta incarnation is remembered as One Who holds Brahman in corporeal bodies, Who is the killer of Madāsura, and Who goes on a mouse-vehicle.
Mahodara thus known incarnation is remembered as One Who shines forth knowledge of Brahman, Who is the enemy of Mohāsura, and Who goes on a mouse-vehicle. Gajānana incarnation is stated as One Who is learned in Sāṅkhya, Who is the giver of siddhi, Who absolved Lobhāsura, and Who goes on a mouse-vehicle.
Lambodara incarnation is said to be the One Who is the annihilator of Krodhāsura, Who goes on a mouse-vehicle, and Who holds the śakti of Brahmā. The incarnation popular as Vikaṭa is remembered as One Who is the vanquisher of Kāmāsura, Whose vehicle is a peacock, and Who possesses the Sun as His own.
Vighnarāja incarnation is said to be the One Whose vehicle is Śeṣanāga, Who is the slayer of Mamāsura, and Who speaks Viṣṇubrahma. Dhūmravarṇa incarnation is said to be the One Who is the destroyed of Abhimānāsura, Who has attained the state of having a mouse-vehicle and Who is belonging to Śiva (or Who is essentially blissful).
These are the eight incarnations (aṁśa) of Gaṇeśa, Who is without a leader, as spoken by me. By the bhajana (seeking or singing) of these (eight names), one can affix the mind on Brahman.
